WESTON, Conn. — A Devine Bioheat van driving north on Lyons Plain Road in Weston drifted off the road and rolled over into the woods Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Just before 2 p.m., Danny Mabowitz and Bill Lamorte were working at a house on Lyons Plain Road when Mabowitz said, "We heard a bang and saw the red van flipped over."

The two ran to check on the wreck. Lamorte jumped on top of the driver's side of the vehicle, and the two asked whether the driver was conscious or injured. The driver told Mabowitz he was OK but wedged in his seat.

"A guy walked over and asked if we needed anything. We asked for a pocketknife. We asked the [driver] to hold on to something. Bill cut the seatbelt and I kicked in the windshield," said Mabowitz. The two pulled out the driver before the fire department arrived — about five minutes after the crash, he said.

"We thought someone had died. It sounded almost like an explosion," said Mabowitz.

Police said the driver was transported to Norwalk Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Traffic was delayed while the van was pulled out of the woods.
